Local Berkshire charity ABC to Read has been awarded a further grant of £2,000 from the Berkshire Community Foundation (BCF) to provide additional support to pupils who are struggling to read.
The grant will allow ABC to Read to recruit and train more volunteers to offer one-to-one mentoring and encourage children to access the joy of reading. The charity works with local school children who are identified by their schools as struggling significantly with their reading. ABC to Read trained mentors make reading fun for the children, encouraging and supporting progress in their ability while nurturing a genuine love of the pastime. They also run parent workshops to teach parents how to help their children to develop this essential life skill.
Marcia Rowlinson, ABC to Read Chief Operating and Development Officer, said: “The summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to revive the joy of reading and we’re delighted that we will be able to continue growing our work with local children thanks to this new BCF grant. Our next volunteer training will be on 29 September and 5 October and we would welcome applications to attend the course.”
